A monkey sacrificed its life while protecting owner’s pigeons from being stolen by a group of thieves in North Kolkata. The incident was reported at Cossipore police station on early Wednesday after the monkey died of severe bleeding as a result of the brutal attack..

Vicky Yadav, owner of the monkey, found the animal lying in a pool of blood on the terrace of his house with both of its legs missing. He immediately rushed it to a veterinary doctor where the animal was declared brought dead, Times of India reported.

Yadav has accused one Md Nasim of trying to steal his pigeons along with other accused on several other occasions as well.

The police has registered a case under IPC section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle etc, of any value or any animal of the value of Rs 50) and arrested Nasim, a resident of KC Road.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the accused had tried to steal the two pigeons when the monkey resisted,” police said.

“The accused had slashed both legs of the monkey and fled from the spot. It seems the poor animal bled excessively all through the night before dying,” a senior investigating officer told the daily.

Meanwhile, the police is also verifying Nasim’s claim that his action was an act of defence.
