Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo just got its best Independence Day gift with the birth of India’s first Humboldt Penguin. The baby penguin was born on August 15 to mother Flipper and father Mr Molt. It is now the first penguin to take birth in India and will be kept under observation for 3 months.
In 2016, eight penguins were brought to the zoo from Seoul, South Korea. The move invited the ire of several animal rights activists who had then raised objections. One of the penguins died later died due to infection. With the birth of the baby, the zoo now has 8 penguins in total. Nevertheless, they remain the biggest attraction of the zoo.
