This IIT is the most favourite institute among JEE toppers

It seems that the preference of the students have changed in past some years. About two decades ago, IIT Kharagpur was the most sought after college

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) is the most preferred engineering college among the toppers of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). Out of the top 100 JEE rank holders, 65 opted for the Bombay campus of the prestigious engineering college. And among the courses, computer science is the first choice of the students.

With 31 students joining the IIT-Delhi, the college is clearly the second favourite among the students. It seems that the preference of the students has changed in the past few years. About two decades ago, IIT Kharagpur was the most sought after college, followed by IIT Madras and Kanpur.

Out of the top 500, each of the old colleges has got 50 students. On the other hand, 201 students took admission in IIT Bombay and 137 students opted for Delhi.

IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar said, “I think students are coming here because of the perception that it is the best institute. In all the rankings, we are pretty high on the student perception level”.

According to experts, there are many reasons for the change in the preference of the students, such as geography, to placement records to what coaching classes tell their students. The performance of IIT-Bombay is improving with each passing year, whereas, that of Madras is slipping.

The JEE chairman said that the interesting factor that came to light is that four students from the top 100, 53 from the first 500 and 123 from the top 1,000 are the students from the other categories out of which there are some who did not use the quota to get into IITs.
