Amid growing tension with Pakistan and China, the vice-chief of Indian Army has been given “full financial powers” in order to maintain combat readiness for “short and intense wars”. The decision has been taken by the government at a time when 1.3 million Army is on high operational alert all along the Line of Actual Control with China.
After the order, 46 different types of ammunition, 22 armaments, half a dozen mines as well as spares for 10 weapon systems ranging from tanks to artillery guns have been identified as “critical requirements” by the Army. The amount spent on it will cost around Rs 35,000-40,000 crore. However, it is unlikely that these funds will be available within the current financial year.
As per a report in the Times of India, a source said, “Now, the government has issued a notification empowering the Army vice-chief to continue with the emergency revenue procurements, as and when required, to maintain optimal stockpiles without taking clearances from the Defence acquisitions council”.

For some time, the Army has been urging the government to ensure quick procurement of key military platforms citing rising security challenges. In a report by news agency PTI, an Army official has been quoted as saying: “It is a major move to fill various gaps in our combat readiness”.
Recently, the Army got modern bullet-proof helmets added to its gear. These helmets which have been provided to the Indian Army are believed to be capable of handling the impact from even a short range. However, as of now, the helmets will not carry the communication device but they can be improvised to include facilities in the future.
