This is how much you need to pay for more than 15 kg luggage in domestic flights

If you are planning to check-in to a domestic flight with more than 15 kg luggage, you should be prepared to shell out more money from your pockets. The airlines can now charge up to Rs 350 per kg beyond 15 kg itself. The decision comes after the Delhi High Court on Wednesday set aside an order of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which barred the airlines from charging more than Rs 100 per kg for excess baggage between 15 kg and 20 kg.

Apart from Air India, all Indian carriers had reduced the free check-in baggage allowance for economy class domestic flyers from 20 kg to 15 kg. The passengers were then made to pay up to Rs 350 for extra baggage. Owing to the complaints, the DGCA had directed that the airlines will not be allowed to charge more than Rs 100 per kg for extra baggage between 15 and 20 kg. However, beyond 20 kg there was no cap by the DGCA on how much they can charge for extra baggage.

Setting aside the order, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday said that the aviation regulator had no authority to fix such tariff for excess checked-in baggage. The order was challenged by the Federation of Indian Airlines, which has carriers like IndiGo, Jet, GoAir and SpiceJet as its members.
