Pingla Rahul More from Mumbai has been declared as the winner of Google India’s “Doodle 4 Google” contest that was open to schoolchildren. Pingla emerged victorious out of 75,000 children who participated in the competition.
The theme was “What inspires me?” for which Pingla drew a space exploration doodle that showed a young girl, who was seen camping under the night sky while looking at the stars through a telescope. “I am extremely inspired by space exploration as there is still so much more to know about our Universe — from planets to stars to galaxies and beyond. It is inspiring to learn how small we are, and how small our problems are, in the grand scheme of things,” Pingla told The Hindu.
Eleven-year-old Pune girl Anvita Prashant Telang was the national winner of the “Doodle 4 Google” contest in 2016. Google made the announcement on Wednesday, which is celebrated as Children’s Day every year on November 14. The day commemorates the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday. Nehru was known for his love towards children and was also popularly called Chacha Nehru.
Explaining why she chose to doodle the space exploration scene, Pingla wrote to Google, “In my Doodle, I demonstrated what inspires me. I am extremely inspired by Space Exploration as there is still so much more to know about our Universe — from planets to stars to galaxies and beyond. It is inspiring to learn how small we are, and how small our problems are, in the grand scheme of things. To convey my idea, I drew myself trying to see the expanse of the space through a telescope, I created galaxies, planets and spacecraft to represent the vastness of things in space. (carefully arranged to represent each letter in the Google logo).”
Before India’s independence, Children’s Day was celebrated on November 20, which is observed as international Children’s Day. Following Jawaharlal Nehru’s death in 1964, India started celebrating it on November 14.
