A day after a model-turned-actor alleged in Kolkata alleged harassment by miscreants near the Jawaharlal Nehru road, a Muslim man has posted a letter to chief minister Mamata Banerjee on social media. In a Facebook post, Imran Zaki has requested the chief minister to act strictly against the accused involved in the incident.
“We are Muslims living in Kolkata for decades. We have been deeply concerned with the two events that occurred recently – the attack on doctors and the attack on actor Ushoshie Sengupta. The attackers in both these cases were members of our community – Muslims. We are grieved and embarrassed,” he wrote.
In his post, he added that the accused should not be spared because of their religion so as to counter the growing perception of Muslim appeasement done by the state. He also asked the government to increase engagement with the community by organising gender sensitisation and civic consciousness programmes.
Here’s the screenshot of the Facebook post:
On June 18, Ushoshi Sengupta was returning home along with a colleague in an Uber taxi when they approached by a few boys on a two-wheeler who hit the car. An altercation ensued after which they allegedly assaulted the driver. When Sengupta stepped in and started recording the incident, the accused tried to break her phone. She then rushed to the nearby police station for help. However, she alleged that the officials initially did not help her.
She later put up a Facebook post narrating her ordeal.
Meanwhile, seven persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. The arrests were made on the basis of video grabs provided by the victim as well as CCTV footage.
We have taken this incident very seriously and seven persons have been arrested so far. On the order of the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, an inquiry regarding the non-registration of F.I.R. has been initiated into this incident, at a very senior level.
