Nirmala Sitharaman was recently elevated as India’s defence minister in the Narendra Modi government’s latest Cabinet reshuffle. She is the first woman to head the portfolio on a full-time basis. Prior to this, Indira Gandhi had headed the defence ministry twice during her stint as prime minister. An old video of the minister preparing pickles at home has gone viral.
The video dates back to 2013 and is believed to have been uploaded by the minister’s husband Parakala Prabhakar on YouTube. The one-minute long video has Sitharaman helping other members of her house in preparing avakaaya or mango pickle. Prabhakar, who is currently the communications advisor to the N Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh has also tweeted the pictures. In fact, Prabhakar had tweeted the pictures four years ago.
“Simplicity at its best. The Lady sitting on the floor making Avakaaya pickles is today the #DefenceMinister of India,” a Twitter user pointed out. On the other hand, singer Chinmayi Sripada pointed out that how women are judged by their homely duties even if they had achieved a lot in their career.
“The thing is – I always see one ‘homely’ photo of a woman achiever in politics. Indra Nooyi to Space scientists, no one is spared,” she tweeted.
Sweet and that looks like Avakaaya I would like to live with. (Also when was the last time we showed a male minister helping his mom?) pic.twitter.com/MGVPl4pWp7
