A Samajwadi Party leader and Corporator in Mumbai, Rais Shaikh has demanded a pay hike for corporators that has left everyone stunned. The SP leader has demanded a 400 per cent hike for corporators and wants their salary be raised from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, which they receive at present.
According to reports published in the Hindustan Times, Shaikh has written a letter to Municipal Commissioner, Ajoy Mehta, stating ‘the salary of work corporators is too low and they should be honoured as citizens.’
The demand has been made after the corporation received a 2-fold jump in pay just months earlier.
In the letter, Shaikh has also asked to raise the travel allowance of corporators from 150 to Rs 500 to attend the general body meetings.

Shaikh further added, ‘we work a lot in our wards and also spend on stationary or postage purposes. Such expenditure cost more than Rs 10,000 a month. But the civic body has not managed to pay us the Rs 25,000 that was approved in 2012. Now, the civic body should raise it to Rs 50,000 at least.’
About a month ago, the monthly pay of MLAs was hiked to Rs 75,000 from Rs 1.5 lakh. The civic body consists of 227 corporators and 5 nominated corporators.
Earlier, in 2012, the civic body proposed to hike corporator’s salary to Rs 25,000 but this is still to be implemented.
