There are many villages in India where electricity is still a dream around 450 million people in the country still do not have access to electricity. But an initiative taken by a UK student has changed the lives of many in a remote village of Uttar Pradesh, Sarvantara. It is because of her effort that around 100 homes in the village have been electrified.
Clementine Chambon, a final year PhD student who is studying at the prestigious Imperial College in UK SET UP mini eight-kWh solar grid with the help of her start-up company- Oorja last month. With the help of grid about 1000 people can have access to affordable lightning, phone charging and fans so as to cool homes.
Most of people in the village earn their livelihood by farming and Clementine said that access to electricity will also help in increasing their productivity. As it is predicted that there will be a less rainfall this year, there will be increase in the demand of electricity for the purpose of irrigation and this initiative is surely going to help them.

As per a report in the PTI, Chambon said, “Villagers are particularly keen to sign up to receive energy from our system for affordable irrigation services. They are very relieved that an alternative to expensive diesel pumps will be available, especially as the diesel price in India is expected to get much more expensive, following recent deregulation of the market”.
