To curb gender bias, Sushma Swaraj asks men to do household chores, women to learn martial arts

External Affairs Minister on Thursday came up with this suggestion at a Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting to review the national policy for women

In order to break gender stereotype, the External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said that men should study Home Science in college and should be encouraged to do household chores like cooking, cleaning, buying groceries and women should learn martial arts. Sushma Swaraj on Thursday came up with the suggestion at a Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting to review the national policy for women.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, a source in the government said, “She told the meeting that encouraging men to study home science will help break the traditional mindset about women. In this way, men can also contribute to making women’s life better. Swaraj said though men and women are working, the workload on women is far more”.

Sushma Swaraj’s  husband Swaraj Kaushal took to twitter on the statement, showing his witty side he came up with a hilarious one-liner, ‘bad times ahead’.

This is for the first time in the last 16 years that the policy is being reviewed and will focus on the issues related to women like their health, employment and education.

There are 11 ministers in GoM that include, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman, urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu, WCD minister Maneka Gandhi among others.

The External Affairs minister also added that today both men and women are working but it is women who face more workload as compared to men, therefore, by studying home science and helping in doing household work they can make women’s life easier.
