In a bizarre incident, a woman in Uttar Pradesh was allegedly given triple talaq because she burnt a roti that she had prepared. The incident happened in Pahretha village of Mahoba district on Sunday when the 24-year-old woman registered a complaint against her husband.
In her complaint, the woman has alleged that her husband inflicted burn injuries with cigarrettes on her body. A case of domestic violence has been registered, reports PTI.
Last year in August, Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment, declared the practice of triple talaq unconstitutional and in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution. In December, Cabinet introduced ‘Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill’, that proposed a jail term of three years for men pronouncing triple talaq to their wives.
While the issue of triple talaq has always been in debate, there have been numerous cases where men divorced their wives over silly reasons.
Last month, a software professional in Delhi sought divorce from his wife because of her addiction to social media. The petitioner said that his wife was so engrossed with social media that she never spared time for him, reports India Today.
In December 2017, a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district was divorced by her husband because she woke up late in the morning. The woman also had accused that her husband used to often beat her, reports The Times of India.
