A panchayat in Uttar Pradesh village has ordered a man to pay a fine of Rs 2,00, 000 for divorcing his wife by triple talaq and to pay Rs 60,000 as mehr to his wife. He also had to return the dowry to bride’s family. This decision was taken by the Turk community on Tuesday at the Madarsa Khalil-ul-Uloom in Sambhal’s Raisati area. It all started when a fight broke out between the couple and the husband uttered talaq thrice in one go and gave divorce to his wife. He also asked his wife to leave his house and go to parents’ place. A 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, got married 10 days ago.
Shahid Hussain, coordinator of the Turk community panchayat said, “The family of the bride then approached the Turk panchayat. The panchayat in its decision yesterday took strong cognizance of the utterance of triple talaq in a single go and unanimously slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the groom who gave the money in cash immediately”.

As per Hussain, no one in the community is allowed to pronounce triple talaq in one go. He said in this particular case, the man could not validate the utterance of triple talaq. adding, in future if anybody does not abide by the decision taken by the panchayat, strict action will be taken against them.

Last month, Supreme Court after hearing batch of petitions on the constitutional validity of triple talaq for six days, reserved its judgement. The bench of Justices Kurien Joseph, U U Lalit, R F Nariman and Abdul Nazeer, heard seven petitions, including five filed by Muslim women, challenging the practice of triple talaq, an instant divorce practice.
