A teacher in Uttarakhand allegedly stripped two of her students as a punishment after they got low marks in the English test paper. When the girls, who are studying at a private secondary school in Landaura (about 8 km from Roorkee), told about the incident to their parents, the protested parents reached the school. Soon after the complaint, police registered the case against the woman teacher under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
“Parents of both girls alleged that the teacher first reprimanded their daughters and then took off their shirts in front of the entire class as they had performed poorly in an English test. A police officer reached the spot and pacified the parents. We have registered a case against the teacher under section 509 of the IPC”, said superintendent of police (rural) Manikant Mishra.
The section under which the teacher has been booked carries a fine and imprisonment of one year or both. However, girls’ parents are demanding that the teacher should be terminated and each classroom in the school should have CCTV.
