A recent Australian ad has left Hindu community fuming as it features Lord Ganesha sitting among other gods and goddesses of different faiths at a modern day spring barbecue. The ad which was released by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) on Monday promotes consumption of lamb meat.
Other gods which are shown in the commercial included Jesus, Buddha, Thor and Zeus, sitting around a dining table tucking into lamb at a barbecue. “to lamb — the meat we can all eat”, says the ad.
The Hindu community has called the ad “ignorant and insensitive” and have demanded that the ad should be banned. Some of the members of the Hindu family living in Australia have called for boycotting lamb so as to get their feelings across to the MLA. Sikhs too have criticised the commercial.
Indian Society of Western Australia spokesman Nitin Vashisht said the commercial was insensitive. “He is shown as … eating lamb and looking for a new marketing strategy for himself. [That] is really very insensitive to the community”, ABC News quoted Vashisht as saying.

As the controversy erupted over the ad, MLA Group Marketing Manager Andrew Howie said the new campaign continues under the ‘You Never Lamb Alone’ banner and showed that everyone can unite over lamb, irrespective of their beliefs or backgrounds.
“We know that lamb has been the meat that brings everyone together for decades, and what better way to celebrate the product than over a modern spring barbecue. Our marketing aims to reach more consumers by making lamb more relevant to a diverse, modern Australia”, Howie said.
