India’s “official” language Hindi has just sparked another debate. It recently triggered a war of words in the Lok Sabha between foreign minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
It all started when a BJP MP asked what’s being done to promote Hindi at the United Nations (UN). Swaraj responded by saying that the government would do anything to make Hindi an official language at the UN. She said that the government is even willing to spend Rs 400 crore for this. However, Tharoor wasn’t impressed with her explanation and questioned if fixating over Hindi would serve any purpose. The debate ended on an unhappy note and Swaraj later took to Twitter to proclaim that she knows Kannada.
