Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which has been in the eye of storm for over an year, has won the Visitor’s award 2017 for the best central university in the country. The announcement was made on the official twitter account of President Pranab Mukherjee who will felicitate the varsity on March 6 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Reacting to the news, JNU Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar in a statement said, “This is a matter of great delight for the entire JNU community that our university has won the Visitor’s Award for the best central university in the India. This recognition is the result of all students, faculty and staff, and their diligence, hard work and indefatigable efforts,”.

Apart from JNU, Dr. Deepak Pant from Central University of Himachal Pradesh has won the Visitor’s Award for ‘Innovation’ and the Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ jointly won by Dr. Shyam Sunder from Banaras Hindu University and Prof. Niranjan Karak from Tezpur University.

In order to promote healthy competition among Central Universities, the Visitor’s award were started in the year 2014 by President. The university has been chosen for Visitor’s Award 2017 by a committee headed by the President’s secretary, Omita Paul, the other members of the committee were: UGC Chairman, Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and secretaries of department of higher education and department of science & technology.
