Wasting Water In Chandigarh? Be Prepared To Shell Out Rs 2,000

With the rise in temperature, the demand for water in Chandigarh has increased leading to shortage of water

From April 15, Chandigarh municipal corporation started a drive against water wastage. On Monday, the civic body issued warning notices to 44 people, while two residents were sent a challan of Rs 2000 each, for wasting potable water. The first challan was issued at Sector 15 to a resident who was watering the lawns while the other was challaned at sector 11, for washing the floor with tap water, The Times of India reported. Most of the 44 notices of warning were over leaking pipes and leakage in overhead tanks.

The municipal corporation has already issued directives that it will take action against those found irrigating the lawns, washing the cars, and hosing down courtyards with the morning supply of water. A repeat offender’s water connection will be suspended without any prior notice. The water conservation drive will continue till June 30.

A statement issued by the commissioner read, “Due to an increase in demand of drinking water in the summer, watering of lawns, washing of courtyards and washing of vehicles etc in the morning water supply hours is prohibited, with effect from April 15 to June 30. Consumption of water for the following actions/reasons shall be considered as wastage and misuse of water shall invite penalty along with disconnection being illegal as per provisions of water supply bylaws.”

With the rise in temperature, the demand for water in Chandigarh has increased leading to shortage of water. The civic body provides 85 MGD (Millions Of Gallons Per Day) even as the demand reaches 116 MGD in summer, The Tribune reported.
