17-year-old Biplab Mondal appeared in exam from Bahirgachi High School, a government-aided school along with his mother Kalyani (32), a housewife and father Balaram (42) who is a farmer. The family hails from Uttar Patikabari village of Nadia district in West Bengal. Kalyani, who got married to Balram when she was in class 8, studied under a tree while her goats grazed in the fields. The board results were declared on May 30 which presented a mixed picture. While mother and son passed the exam, the head of the family, Biplab’s father failed.

Notedly, Balaram and Kalyani passed the Madhyamik exam in 2014 and 2015 respectively, they enrolled in the school.
