Textiles Minister Smriti Irani recently challenged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to make her stance clear on the controversial triple talaq issue. Irani who visited Kolkata to attend the party workers meet also hit out at the West Bengal CM for blaming the centre for the CBI probe against her party leaders in connection with the Narada sting case.
“I am interacting with you in a state which is governed by a female chief minister. When we talk about equality and justice, I would love to hear what Mamata Didi feels about triple talaq,” she said during a press conference. This comes days after Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also asked her to make her stand clear on the triple talaq issue.
“It is said that after Uttar Pradesh the maximum number of women affected by triple talaq is in West Bengal. What have you (Mamata) got to say about these victims of triple talaq? We want to ask the Chief Minister of West Bengal as to what is her stand as far as rank injustice to the victims of triple talaq is concerned,” he said.
While the chief minister of West Bengal has not made stand on triple talaq clear, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has affirmed that those who are silent on the issue of triple talaq were at fault too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also come forward to condemn the practice. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Law Board had said while it was wrong it was still a valid way to end a marriage. However, he added that those misusing it shall face social boycott.
