Child rapists in India will now be executed. But is death penalty an effective solution to end India’s rape culture?
In 2015, 10,854 cases of rapes against children were registered in India that spiked to 19,765 cases of sexual assault on children in 2016. But only 28% of these cases resulted in a conviction. In 90% of the cases, the victims already knew the offenders.
Activists fear death penalty will lead to under-reporting of rape cases. They also say it would make the legal process lengthier and more complicated.
Experts opine high conviction rate and speedy trial is an effective deterrent rather than the death penalty.
