Thousand of people have taken to the streets in Istanbul after results were declared in the recently-conducted polls in Turkey. People are celebrating the victory of the opposition party in the re-run of the city’s mayoral elections. Ekrem Imamoglu of Republican People’s Party defeated ex PM Binali Yildirim of the ruling AKP and ended its 25 year rule in the city.
Istanbul, which is Turkey’s largest city is said to be the country’s economic powerhouse. The victory is said to be a big blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is often criticised for his dictatorial policies.
