In the city of forgotten icons, yet another institution shuts shop. Meat lovers of Kolkata are mourning the closure of an iconic meat shop that served the city for more than seven decades. Kalman Cold Storage located at Mirza Ghalib Street was a strictly a non-vegetarians’ paradise. Be it smoked ham or spiced salami, meatloaf or lean bacon, Kalman had every delicacy that one could ask for.
Kalman Gohari, a Hungarian trapeze artist started the meat shop in the 1940s. In the 1960s, a Kolkata family took over the business. Years passed and many old workers retired while the newer ones refused to touch meat. Managing operations subsequently became difficult. Finally, the owners decided to close it down
