A 21-year-old engineering student died last month while taking part in a bike racing challenge in Karnataka’s Chitraguda. Mithun Ghosh died after his speeding bike rammed into a lorry. His is not an isolated story. Every year scores of young men lose their lives to rash driving. Racing and biking stunts have become a menace in metro cities. Two-wheelers account for the highest share in road accidents. Of every 100 fatalities on road, 27 happen to be bikers. India witnessed 230,531 bike related fatalities between 2011 and 2016. Most of the deaths occur due to over speeding or bikers not wearing helmets.
Many young bikers use deserted roads to perform dangerous stunts like wheelie and stoppie and indulge in over-speeding. Just to get some cheap thrills or to impress their friends. Police often struggle to deal with the impending menace as their bikes are not as powerful as the bikes of speedsters. Their misadventure also puts the lives of pedestrians at risk.
