Likening cow with mother, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday asserted that state government will show no sympathy for those who are involved in cow slaughter.
““Cow is our mother. It is an article of faith for us. This state government is not prepared to have any sympathy for those who have no mercy on cows,” he said while addressing a public gathering at Aji Dam Police Station after he inaugurated a sewage treatment plant to public near Kothariya village Gujarat.
“This session (of the Gujarat Assembly), we have passed a Bill and Gujarat has become the first state in India to have a law which provides for life imprisonment sentence for those who slaughter cows, he was quoted as saying by Indian Express
Underlining that cow slaughter has been prohibited with a view to help farmers and cattle-breeder, Rupani said,”This state government has made strict laws to prevent slaughter of cow and its progeny. Cow is not merely an article of faith for us, it is also a mode of earning in villages through cattle-breeding.”
Rupani’s comments came just a few days after Pehlu Khan a dairy farmer was killed by a group of cow vigilants in Rajasthan’s Alwar on suspicion of cow smuggling.
