With the reopening of these synagogues, Kolkata is re-claiming its Jewish history

The Jewish community in Kolkata has been dwindling. During the World War II, there were as many as Baghdadi Jewish immigrants in Kolkata. Now, there only around 30 of them remain and they have been struggling to keep their culture alive.

However, a recent move to reopen two 19th century synagogues — Beth El, located near Pollack Street, and Maghen David, located at the crossing of Brabourne Road and Canning Street — in the city will likely help strengthen Kolkata’s connection to its Jewish history.
