Increase in the number of girl students at one of the premier engineering institute in the country, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi this time is indeed a welcoming step, however, it turns out that that the institute has not enough space for them. “We have accommodated all undergraduate students in the hostel. Around 100 masters students have been allotted rooms in the adjacent building. It is a temporary arrangement”, said a senior IIT official. The official added that due to 30% increase in the number of women students this time in under graduate and post graduate courses there is shortage of accommodation.
Students have also complained about the shortage of rooms in the IIT Delhi to Human Resource Development (HRD) minister, Prakash Javadekar. They claimed that the institute did not have enough cots and they had to sleep on the mattress which were spread on the floor.
The officials at the institute said that they have given order for the 30-40 cots which will be available to the students by Saturday. They said last year too some students were shifted to the adjacent building but soon they were allotted rooms.
