Yet again, Bellandur lake caught fire when the debris which was being burnt around the lake fell in the waterbody. As the lake is covered with dried up weeds and is often dumped with toxic chemicals, the lake caught fire. The blaze is not just restricted to the lake but that reached the Iblur flyover and Sun City as well.
There is hardly any water left in the lake has no water while a lot of weed is grown along with sewage and debris that are accumulated in the lake. Though the Bengaluru Development Authority had taken up the initiative to restore the lake in January but no work has begun as yet.
Huge clouds of white, toxic foam are often seen floating around the biggest lake in Bengaluru – Bellandur Lake. Puzzled by the fire in the highly polluted lake, the fire department personnel said, “How can we put out a fire in water?”
There have been reports of any casualties due to the fire. An ambulance had been called in as a precautionary measure when the fire erupted around 5:50 pm on Thursday.
This is not the first time that the Bellandur lake has caught fire. The environmental hazards of the lake have often been brought to the fore. Earlier on May 16, 2015, yellowish flames had emerged from the toxic froth near the Yemlur side of the Bellandur lake.
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board had found that the fire was caused due to the methane build-up on the surface of the lake.
The froth is believed to have been formed due to deposits from detergents and cleaners that had entered the lake through sewage pipes.
