In the wake of recent instances of violence in the name of cow protection, Veteran actor and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan took a swipe at BJP led central government saying it is more concerned about protecting cows than woman.
Making a strong pitch for woman safety, Mrs Bachchan said,” the government must take steps for protection of women aggressively” and added that this government is protecting cows but atrocities being committed on women.” She was speaking in Rajya Sabha amid uproar over a BJP youth worker;s announcement of Rs 11 Lakh bounty on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s head.
Mrs Bachchan said that threat call to anyone is condemnable and the government must ensure the safety of women. The BJP government has faced fierce criticism for not doing enough to check cow vigilantism in the country. Earlier, TMC MP Sugatha Roy raised the issue and demanded strict action against BJP youth wing worker Yogesh Varshney for announcing bounty on Mamata’s head.
“Mamata Banerjee is not just the Chief Minister of Bengal, she is also a leader who has emerged from the grassroots. Strong action must be taken against people who try to make provocations of these nature,” Roy said.
The government also condemned Varshney’s remark. “We condemn this statement. We respect CM Mamata Banerjee,” said BJP Leader Ananth Kumar in Lok Sabha.
