Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is an important festival which is celebrated by the Hindus and the Sikhs. As per the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls on April 13 or 14 every year and marks the Sikh New Year. The festival is celebrated all across India and has several variations amongst the different parts of the country. In Assam, the festival is celebrated as Bohag Bihu while in Odisha, it is known as Maha Vishuva Sankranti. In the state of West Bengal, the festival marks the new year and is known as Pohela Boishakh.

In the state of Punjab, which is the most popular for its Baisakhi celebrations, the festival also marks arrival of spring with the rabi harvest, an important cash crop. On this day, farmers pay their tributes to God for the abundant harvest and also pray for the sustenance of prosperity in their lives. For the Sikhs, the day is doubly special as it also marks the day when the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, established the Khalsa panth of warriors.

Each region may have their own names and fashion in which they celebrate this festival but if there is one thing that remains common among them is the joy of new beginnings. Celebrations in all the variations of Baisakhi mostly feature folk dances which are accompanied by folk music. Bhangra is one popular folk dance that is often associated with the festival. The dances and the songs constitute a dominant tradition which celebrates the harvest.
