Debugged: What is it really like to be an Indian pornstar in Australia?

What's an average day like in the life of a pornstar?

I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a first-class honors in history and fine arts in 2011. I had a plethora of options available- I could teach, I could paint, I could be a cinematographer or I could just come back to India (Yes, I was born and brought up in Chandigarh). But I chose to become an adult film actress. Yes, I am a pornstar and this is my story.

Even though I grew up in a conservative Chandigarh household, my parents always gave me the freedom to do whatever I want. I spent my childhood and teens wanting to be an astronaut, an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer and an actor. I wasn’t one of those people who always knew what they want to do in life; I was a free spirit. When I left for Melbourne, my life changed forever.

During my second year at the University, I made a rather adventurous friend and we made a video (yes, that video) and we went viral all over Australia. People wanted to see me, more of me. This helped me realize my strength: My sexuality. No, I was not ashamed. If people can be appreciated for their knowledge, for their beauty, for their oratory skills, then why not their sexuality? I worked as a pornstar for one year and then finally made my own website and things just kept falling into place.

“I’m a pornstar, and my sexuality is my strength.”

My website gets millions of hits every month and it’s safe to say that I live a comfortable life. I’m an Indian pornstar in Australia. I live a dual life. My videos are only available in Australia and my parents have no idea of my profession. Here’s a glimpse of what my life is like:

Since I’m in front of the camera every day, I need to be fit. An average day for me is yoga, waxing, and manicures. Not as exciting as you’d think, right? Since I’m running my own production company and website, paperwork and video editing is something that keeps me busy for the entire day.

When I worked as a pornstar for one of the biggest porn websites in Australia, my call-time was usually 12 noon. I’d get up, pack up my sex toys, get dolled up and leave for the sets. On sets, the environment isn’t as sexy as you think. We reach the sets, read scripts, discuss the story ideas and shoot all day. It’s tiring, having sex all day, it’s not easy. Your back, waist, and genitals hurt. Even though you may opt out of it, you sometimes have to do the BDSMesque scenes that really take a toll on female pornstars.

Another thing with the female pornstar is that if she’s new and fails to make a mark, i.e if people don’t comment on her videos asking her name and saying how they can’t wait to see her videos and if she fails to get likes and views, she will disappear. Hey, it isn’t easy for the male pornstars either: Their job is difficult- they have to get hard and stay hard on the director’s command, not finish early, or finish early on his command. All this with bright lights all around and other clothed crew members watching.

“Being a pornstar isn’t easy”

Post-shooting, I like to go home, relax and then go out with my friends. Oh wait, is that what you do too? Well then we’re not that different, are we?

I still get asked: When will you get a real career? Do you want to be an actress? My passion is pornography. I plan to study further in the field of media and pornography for advocating for the rights of sex industry workers. This is my career. My life. My choice.
