Can Melania trump Michelle Obama’s style quotient?

Will Melania Trump do a Mitchell Obama, or pose for beautiful photographs and be the trophy wife of the President of the United States?

As Donald Trump swears in as the American president on Friday, the fashion police are going to keep a sharp eye on the First Lady to be Melania Trump. She has big shoes to fill as her predecessor, Michelle Obama’s personal style was simple yet suave, tailor-made to inspire working women.

In 2009, Michelle chose to wear a soft butter yellow suit, which was the Cuban-American Isabel Toldeo’s artistic impression. In the Inauguration Ball, she looked resplendent in a Jason Wu off-shoulder floor length dress. For the last eight years, Michelle chose designers who were not only affordable but also supported causes that were close to her heart.

However, Trump’s campaign for keeping it ‘All American’ won’t allow these designers who are from ‘outside’ the country. Melania is also likely to choose designers who have similar political views—going by the guest list at the inaugural function so far, there aren’t many. But she is bound to stay ‘local’.

The slightly conservative look that she has been donning in her last few public appearances suggests that she wouldn’t probably be flaunting her body too much and would go for a higher neckline. Mrs Trump loves to wear solid colours and the former model seems quite confident in slim lined floor length dresses.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, Ralph Lauren would be dressing Melania, but the spokespersons from the brand have been tight-lipped about it. The reason being: Ralph has been an outspoken supporter of Hillary Clinton during her race for Presidency last year. She is likely to choose her to go to shoe designer Manolo Blahnik for the evening.

After the US presidential election results, many designers—Tommy Hilfiger, Diane Von Furstenberg, Thom Browne, Carolina Herrera to name a few—have shown interest in dressing the wife of the most powerful man in the country. She is a beautiful woman with strong sense of personal style and is very brand conscious. Plus, designing for the first lady would mean a jump in business.

There have also been some designer labels who have shown disinterest in dressing the first lady up because of the political stand point of Donald Trump. Marc Jacobs, Humberto Leon, Derek Lam have all been outspoken in against designing for Melania.

Of course, she wouldn’t have a dearth of designer wear for all her public appearances in the coming four years, but will she become her own person as Michelle Obama did in the last eight years, or pose for beautiful photographs and be the trophy wife of the President of the United States.

Hopefully, she wouldn’t rip off Michelle’s dressing style as she did with her speech just a few months ago.
