What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Tibetian food? Momos? While the dish is indeed a yummilicious appetiser and has gained immense popularity over the years (thanks to its savoury filling and chilli sauce), the Tibetan cuisine is filled with delights that will leave a sweet taste in your mouth.
To give you a quick geography lesson, Tibet, which is also called the ‘roof of the world‘, is located at a high altitude. This makes vegetation in this region scarce. The Tibetan cuisine mainly revolves around rice, cream or cheese which is made from yak milk and various types of meat.
So from special soups and noodles to different types of bread, here are seven Tibetan dishes that you need to try now:
1) Thenthuk
It’s a special type of soup which is made using wheat flour, mixed vegetables, and mutton or yak meat. You can also try vegetable thenthuk, which is made using boiled vegetables.
2) Thukpa
This Tibetian noodle soup originated in the eastern part of the region. It consists of hand-pulled noodles which are served with a variety of vegetables. It is also popular in Nepal and Himachal Pradesh.
3) Tingmo
Tingmo is a special Tibetian bread that is made by steaming the bun and is similar to a momo. However, it does not contain any filling.
4) Shapta
Shapta is a Tibetan gravy which is served with a steamed bun. Its main ingredients include chicken, ginger and red chilli. Another variation of the dish includes stir-fried meat.
5) Lowa Khatsa
This one is only for die-hard non-vegetarian food lovers. It is made using pieces of fried animal lung.

6) Mokthuk
Soups are one of the most important parts of the Tibetian cuisine. And a meal is usually incomplete without a bowl of mokthuk. It is served with fresh vegetables and spices.

7) Phingsha
It’s a popular Tibetian dish that consists of mung bean vermicelli, beef, potatoes and dried mushrooms. It is served with a spicy sauce.
