Did you know that there’s a popular dish called “Eggs Kejriwal” and it is being served in some of the biggest restaurants across the country? Now, we are not surprised if you are wondering if the name was derived from our very own Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Sadly, no. The dish has nothing to do with our Delhi CM. The dish “Eggs Kejriwal” has been around much before than Aam Aadmi Party came into being. In fact, the dish was introduced in the 1960s and is said to be absolutely delicious.
This Mumbai dish just topped the New york’s food critic list. Pete Wells who listed his top 10 favorite 10 dishes of 2016 placed Eggs Kejriwal on the top of the list. Reviewing the dish Pete said, “It’s a fried egg on toast under melted Cheddar that stands out from all others because of a throat-catching green chutney that has a glossy underpinning of coconut oil.”
Now coming to how did it actually get its name from?
The story behind the name of the behind this dish is as interesting as the name itself. It was named after this person called Mr. Devi Prasad Kejriwal who belonged to a conservative and a vegetarian Marwari family. He apparently visited Willingdon Sports Club at Tardeo in Mumbai on a regular basis after a game of golf. And turns out, Mr Kejriwal was a bit of a rebel. He asked the waiters to get him his special eggs on a toast with cheese and green chilies.
The dish started to gain popularity and in no time, people who visited the Willingdon Sports Club used to say, “Get what Mr. Kejriwal was eating.”
Of course, with time “Eggs Kejriwal” was modified to give a slight twist. Yet, it still remains a simple and a homely dish.
So there, now you know it. Next time you come across this dish on a menu and people wonder if it’s a tribute to Arvind Kejriwal impress them with this peculiar history of “Eggs Kejriwal.”
