It is the month of festivals and the next one on the list is every woman’s favourite (just assuming) Karwa Chauth. And just like every other Bollywood crazy fan, I grew up watching Hindi movies that glorify this festival and makes you believe in the power it. But keeping the fasting thing aside, I really love the fact that women around the world get all dolled up with hands full of heena and wearing their traditional or you can say bridal lehengas. In case some of you don’t know what the festival is, then let me tell you that Karwa Chauth is all about fasting for the long life of your husband and forget about having food, you are not even allowed to have a drop of water until you see the moon.
While many women feel it is their moral responsibility to fast for their beloved husbands, some came out of the closet and questioned this tradition. I know it takes a lot of courage to go against some age-old traditions, but what’s the harm in not accepting to follow these blindly? Well no, I am not here to brainwash you guys, all I am saying is, if you don’t believe in it, then following it to please your family and the society is just useless.
And if you are one of those who want a logical explanation as to why you should not fast for your ‘better half’. Here you go:
Why is it that only your husband deserves to have a long life and not you? So, if he loves you so much and cares about you then he should also fast for your long life. Right!
Are you sure that by not eating or drinking anything for the whole day, nothing bad will happen to your husband?
Do you think God is that mean and evil that if you will not fast for a day he will kill your husband? Come on!
Also, the rituals and traditions of this fast changes according to every culture. Like Punjabi’s have a ritual of eating before sunrise, while others believe in not eating anything at all. I mean if it holds that much of importance, then why can’t it be the same for everyone?
Answer this. Do you think your husband is second God, whom you need to please by starving yourself? And if your answer is yes, then lady, you have taken the ‘Mera Pati Mera Devta Hai’ song way too seriously!
Good for you if you want to keep the Karwa Chauth fast for your husband. But is it out of fear or societal pressure and not love? And if the answer is a BIG yes, then instead of liking those feminist kinds of messages on social media, go and be a part of some fake baba’s group.
Last but not the least, the life expectancy of men in India is somewhere around 68 years. So good luck with your fast, ladies!
