“Oh my God! Esha Gupta just shared a nude picture on Instagram” — Was the first thing I heard last week when I entered the office. While some were disgusted, a few appreciated. We stuck on the point how Esha Gupta just broke the ‘nudity is vulgarity’ stereotype.  This time it is Kalki Kochein. The Waiting actress took to her photo sharing app and posted a naked picture of herself with a beautiful caption: “Half way between shadow and light by @rivabubber #blackandwhite #loveyournakedness”. Did you notice the last hashtag she used here? Yes, it is always about loving your nakedness. It’s about getting comfortable with your body. ‘Love your nakedness’ — Such an empowering statement it is. No?

Kalki’s latest picture is such a beautiful piece of art that you just can’t take your eyes off it. The light and shadow, black and white image of Kalki’s back, fully naked evokes no vulgarity, has no sexual connotation or doesn’t try to cater to the male gaze. The only thing it does is prove that a woman’s body can achieve much more than sell magazines or sell products. It can be used as an instrument of self-expression or for artistic expression. In a country where a nude scene of an actress every time results in questions “were you comfortable doing that?” or the real fear of the scene being leaked and circulated as happened with Radhika Apte’s scene in Parched, the likes of Kalki and Esha are putting themselves out without any fear of backlash.  Esha got slut shamed for posting her nude images. In response, she disabled the comments to her pictures. A middle finger to trolls who behave like pathological sexual predators at one extreme end and as moral police on the other extreme. She got back with a vengeance and posted more nudes.

The interesting thing about this new age nudity is that it isn’t bold and beautiful. It’s just normal. While Kalki’s photo-series is about turning her body into an instrument for art, Esha’s photo series was about hanging out with your naked body in your house, just like we do in our Pajamas. There are no pursed red lips, or a strange hip bend – nothing that reduces a woman’s body to mere flesh to satisfy the male gaze. It has no commercial agenda. But a simple message to sell – own your body and shamelessly so.

Society sees us as sexual objects, but these actresses have finally made people understand that it’s time to move over connecting a few words like sexuality, nudity, and vulgarity. Though the comments Esha Gupta received after posting her photo were disgusting, we are glad Kalki got some really beautiful comments. And these comments prove that we are in a progressive society. These comments are not just beautiful but also show the change in the mindset of people. How our society is changing for better and how we are growing to be a positive person!
