It took quite a while for swing music to find its way to the streets of India, even though its influence could already be seen in Hindi film music. From the ballroom of Bombay’s Taj Hotel, it reached the studios of Indian cinema, where the experiments with jazz symphonies began a love affair that has endured time.
On World Music Day, we take a trip down memory lane with Bollywood’s most catchy tunes being recreated by a band in Delhi. Bollyjazz is a breath of fresh air in this stale era of redundant lyrics and automated loops that the industry tries to pass off as music. Nikhil Mawkin and Nathalie Ramirez have been blending jazz with some of the classics from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Bollyjazz is unique fusion band that blends Bollywood music with jazz tunes. From Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si to Shola Jo Bhadke, Bollyjazz the band has recreated melodies in the most unique way possible. The main lead Nikhil usually composes the arrangements and is mostly accompanied by Nathalie on the flute. However, the duo often collaborates with the capital’s musicians to suit the composition’s needs and create an enthralling ensemble.
During one such rendezvous, Bollyjazz performed to a packed audience, one that included more youngsters (millennials) than you would believe. With growing admirers in the city, the band has gained recognition across age groups. However, they hope to move out of the elite clubs and take jazz to the streets of Delhi. Just like the optimism of jazz, Nikhil and Nathalie are sure that they can achieve this feat and keep their concoction-genre alive.
