#2017In5Words: How Twitter came together to define the year that was

As #2017In5Words began trending on Twitter, users picked out a few interesting words from the wide pool of "priorities" for our nation.

Briefly recapping the year that was 2017, let’s remind ourselves of the obsession with Padmavati – her basic existence still remains questionable – whose imagined honour we were quick to defend. Not to forget that our cows were better protected this year than children in Jharkhand.

Now, what if you were asked to describe the year in five words. Twitter, of course, is here to lend an ear to your year-ending woes or joys, depending on how you describe the year. As #2017In5Words began trending on Twitter, on Tuesday, users picked out a few interesting words from the wide pool of “priorities” for our nation.

Let’s take a quick recap of a few things that happened this year. We have all been nagged about linking our precious Aadhar cards to our bank accounts, SIM cards, our welfare schemes and our Paytm wallets. Link up, or face banishment from your bank accounts.

If DeMo taught us something, it was that we were delusional to think that our hard-earned money belongs to us. We were clearly mistaken because our money belongs to the government, to hold it hostage as and when they deem fit.

The dilemma with Aadhar is similar. Those reluctant to buy into the government’s idea of “portable identity, which can be authenticated anytime and anywhere” are wary of the government’s snooping eyes. They worry that the government is like a neighbourhood know-it-all, nosy aunty, who tracks all of our movements and, you know, keeps our parents or landlords “apprised” of everything that’s going on with us.

Seems so non-threatening, doesn’t it?
