Torchbearers of ‘gender equality’ are always men, or so claims the UAE government.
Twitteratis took a jibe at the UAE government after the list of winners at ‘Gender Balance Index Awards’, an initiative to ensure gender parity in the workplace, did not even have a single woman in it.
Vice president of the UAE and leader of Dubai Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, distributed the awards on various categories namely ‘Best Personality for Supporting Gender Balance’, ‘Best Federal Entity for Supporting Gender Balance,’ and the ‘Best Initiative for Supporting Gender Balance ‘ entirely to men.
Photographs of the ceremony were ridiculed by a large section of twitteratis

A Dubai media office news release said that Maktoum had “recognised the efforts” of one woman – Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – but she did not win an award.
The initiative, which was started in 2017, had awarded a woman the ”UAE Gender Balance Seal Award” in its first edition.
UAE had ranked 121 in the World Economic Forum report on the gender gap in 2018. The report said that the country sees improvements in gender parity in the legislators, senior officials and managers, and healthy life expectancy indicators, but a widening and counterbalancing gap in wage equality. India was at the 108th position the WEF ranking.
