Delhi’s iconic Sunday Book Market, which has been a favourite among book lovers for over five decades, has found itself a new home. The roadside market which once spread across Netaji Subhash road to Asaf Ali Road in Daryaganj has now been relocated to Mahila Haat following a court order. In the aftermath of days of uncertainty over the fate of 250 vendors, the market reopened evoking mixed response from both book sellers and customers. For every book geek and bibliophile, the idea of spending their Sundays meant a visit to the Daryaganj book bazaar. The market has been offering all kinds of second-hand study books, magazines and novels at cheaper rates.
In July this year, the Delhi High Court ordered North Delhi Municipal Corporation to ensure that no weekly markets are permitted on Netaji Subhash Marg. The order came after Delhi Traffic Police and North Delhi Municipal Corporation told the court that the area had been declared a ‘no-squating no hawking zone’. Over 250 vendors had then organised a strike and the market was temporarily closed for many weeks.
