Saturday night’s fire in Mumbai’s Cinevista studio, located in the eastern suburb of Kanjurmarg, has claimed one life. The charred remains of Gopi Verma, a sound engineer, was found during early morning search operations on Sunday.

“The fire broke out at Cinevista studio on LBS Road around 8 pm. While efforts were on to douse the flames, so far there are no reports of anyone getting injured. Electrical wiring inside the studio caught fire first”, PTI quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) Akhilesh Singh.

While initial reports had suggested that no casualties were reported, Verma’s body was found with 100 per cent burns inside the studio on Sunday morning, The Indian Express reported. Senior inspector, Park Site police station, Vilas Jadhav said Verma worked as an audio assistant for a television serial’s production unit.

Verma’s family reported he was missing soon after the fire erupted at the studio. Two TV serials, Bepanaah and Haasil, were being shot when the building was on fire. Over 100 crew member were evacuated from the studio. It is not clear how Verma got stuck despite evacuations, NDTV reported.
What happened?
The fire was brought under control around 10 pm, two hours after it broke out. The fire had apparently started close to the studio’s generator.
The studio is a ground-plus-one structure. Eight fire engines and six water tankers have been pressed into service to put out the flames. However, before the fire tenders could reach the studio, flames were seen erupting out of the building from afar. The incident was classified as a ‘Level 3’ fire.

Kamala Mills Fire
The incident comes close on the heels of the Kamala Mills fire that killed 14 pople, including 11 women. Most casualties were in the age bracket of 20s and 30s. Several others also received injuries in the fire that started from a restaurant, Mojo’s Bistro, and quickly spread to nearby eateries and offices.
A case has been filed and one of the owners, Yug Patha, the son ofPune’s former top cop KK Pathak has been arrested.
