Is ‘Murti Todo’ India’s Latest Obsession?

BJP workers in Tripura might be still rejoicing over their ‘Lenin fall’ moment but it has surely inspired many other agitated/frustrated people to unleash a spate of ‘murti todo’ attacks across the country. After BJP’s infamous demolition drive in Tripura, there were a string of such incidents. Social reformer Periyar’s statue was damaged in Tamil Nadu, Hindutva icon Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s was blackened in Kolkata,
BR Ambedkar’s statue was vandalised in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut as well as in Chennai and even Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was blackened in Kerala.While everyone is in their full right to register protests,
but what’s this obsession with attacking statues?
