Kerala Opens ‘Apna Ghar’, A Home Away From Home For Migrant Labourers

It was built to provide cheap, safe & hygienic accommodation to workers from other states.

For 25 lakh migrant labourers working in Kerala, the state government last week inaugurated Apna Ghar, the country’s first hostel for migrant labourers at Kanjikode in Palakkad district. With a capacity of housing 620 male workers, the hostel was built at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore to provide cheap, safe & hygienic accommodation. It will feature shared rooms with bunk beds, indoor washrooms, kitchens & dining halls along with recreational facilities at a monthly rent of Rs 800. It is also equipped to handle fire emergencies and power outage as well as ensures 24/7 security through CCTV surveillance. The state government also plans to set up similar hostels in other districts as well.
