In order to bring transparency and accountability in police department, now a fine will be imposed on the officials who delay in performing their services.
Police officers will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 or Rs 250 as a daily fine if they fail to provide a copy of FIR on the same day or if the verification of passport is not completed in 20 days.
Many such penalties which will be imposed on the officers are suggested by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) so as to encourage good practices in police services.
BPR&D has listed 45 services and if officials fail in these duties, they will have to pay the fine.Verification of passports, NOC for protest, issuance of licence, verification of tenants and foreigners, no objection certificate for a music programme, are some of the services which will come under the category of ‘Public Delivery Services’.
As per the penalty imposed now officials will also have to pay a fine of Rs 250 each day as long as they delay in performing their duties. These penalties may sound a little hard on the officers as for every 729 citizens, there is only one police officer.
As per a report published in Times of India, BPR&D recommended that these 45 services of police should be incorporated in a ‘Citizens’ Charter’ of states/UTs in order to empower citizens.
The move has come after the BPR&D shared its report with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) suggesting that a time limit should be imposed on the police officers for completing their duties.
