Sonu Nigam azaan row: Shrish Kunder finds a connection between celebration and noise

Filmmaker Shirish Kunder has expressed his opinion on Sonu Nigam's azaan controversy

Sonu Nigam’s early morning rant on Twitter on azaan snowballed into a major controversy with several people slamming him over the remark. There were some people who stood by the playback singer, saying his comments had been misinterpreted.

A cleric in West Bengal issued a fatwa against Nigam, announcing a reward of Rs 10 lakh to the person who would shave his head, garland him with old shoes and parade him throughout the country. Nigam went ahead and got his head shaved as well. Amid the entire row, filmmaker expressed his opinion through a tweet.”How will everyone know we are happy and celebrating, unless we make noise and make their life miserable?” the Jaan-E-Mann director said.

Shirish Kunder is married to filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan, and has directed films like Jaan-E-Mann and Joker. Both Farah and Sonu Nigam have judged reality show Indian Idol together.

Sonu Nigam’s tweet has clearly divided the film fraternity even as he continues to defend his arguments. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, actors Anupam Kher and Richa Chadha have come out in support of the National Award winning singer. However, singer Mika Singh, filmmaker Pooja Bhatt and music director Wajid Khan of Sajid-Wajid duo openly criticised Nigam for his remark.

Sonu Nigam sparked row by saying he was not a Muslim but was woken up by azaan early in the morning. He went on to term the act as ‘forced religiousness’ and goondagardi (hooliganism).
