The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a historic judgment by declaring that homosexuality is no longer a crime. Pronouncing the judgment, the apex court ruled that an individual has no control over their sexual orientation.
The apex court overruled its own 2013 verdict that pronounced homosexuality as a crime under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The 158-year-old colonial law under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was finally partially struck down by a constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra. The bench stressed on the other aspects of Section 377, dealing with unnatural sex with animals and children, which will still remain in force.
As soon as the judgment was announced, Twitter exploded as people applauded the historic ruling.
So pleased to learn that the SupremeCourt has ruled against criminalising sexual acts in private. This decision vindicates my stand on Section 377& on exactly the same grounds of privacy, dignity &constitutional freedoms. It shames those BJP MPs who vociferously opposed me in LS.

We are witnessing history being made. Hats off to all my #LGBT rights activist friends who have battled hard to get here. You have saved India from the shame of being one of the remaining countries in the world that criminalises #homosexuality – thank you for that. #Section377
