Craving for brownies, if yes then instead of going to a patesserie, pay a visit to a temple in Padappai in Chennai. Yes you heard it right, the temple located on the outskirts of Chennai has dropped the idea of going conventional when serving prasadam.
In this temple you get brownies, sandwiches, cherry tomato salads as prasad and not only this but all these offerings have a manufactured date and expiry date which are mentioned on the products and they are all certified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSAI).
Generally, temples in southern part of India give tamarind rice as serving but as the temple has different menu for prasad the way in which it’s given is also new. There is no pandit who serves the offering at the Jaya Durga Peetham instead a vending machine has been put in place in which you can drop the token and the prasad is given to you.
Also, if you visit this temple on your birthday then you are given ‘ birthday cake prasadam’ and instead of candles the birthday cake has deepam on it. Devotees who paid visit on their birthday were surprised when got a cake as prasadam and for some of them it was the first time when they got a surprise cake.
The temple has got famous among the visitors as they are fascinated by the idea of getting brownies, sandwiches and cakes as prasad. K Sri Sridhar, a herbal oncologist who assisted in setting up the temple told TOI, “The idea was to show that anything that is nutritious and prepared in a clean kitchen with a clean mind can be served to God. It doesn’t have to be only traditional dishes”.
