Shammi was born as Nargis Rabadi in 1929
Shammi was born in a Parsi family in Bombay in 1929. Her father was a priest in a temple and had died when she was just three years old. Her mother took care of her and her sister Mani Rabadi (who grew up to be a fashion designer) single-handedly.

Shammi was introduced to Bollywood by a family friend
Shammi had no plans of joining Bollywood. A family friend of hers used to work with ‘Mother India’ director Mehboob Khan and was very cordial with actor and producer Sheikh Mukhtar. He introduced Shammi to Mukhtar and suggested that she plays a role in Ustad Pedro, which became her debut movie in 1949.
