Afghan batsman Shafiqullah Shafaq sets a record, smashes 214 runs in 71 balls in a local T20 game

Shafiqullah smashed 214 runs off just 71 balls with the help of 21 sixes and 16 fours against the Kabul Star Cricket Club team. His efforts led them putting a total of 351 on the scoreboard in just 20 overs

The Afghanistan cricket team and its players have marked their presence at the international level in a very short period of time. After the players like Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan gaining fame across the world, another Afghani cricketer gained notability overnight after he made an incredible record. Wicketkeeper-batsman Shafiqullah Shafaq played an unbelievable knock of 214 runs in a local T20 tournament called Paragon Nangarhar Champion Trophy.

According to several media reports, representing the Khateez Cricket Academy, Shafiqullah smashed 214 runs off just 71 balls with the help of 21 sixes and 16 fours against the Kabul Star Cricket Club team. At the other end, he was supported by his own brother Waheedullah Shafaq who struck 81 from 31 balls and hit 10 fours and 3 sixes. Waheedullah has represented Afghanistan at domestic level.

Their combined efforts led them putting a total of 351 on the scoreboard in just 20 overs. In return, the opponent team Kabul Star Cricket Club got all out for 107 runs and lost the game by 244 runs.

Shafiqullah Shafaq is a regular T20 player who has represented Afghanistan national team in three edition of ICC World T20. He has also played the 50-over Cricket World Cup in 2015 and is known for his hard-hitting skills. In 2014, while playing against Hong Kong in WT20 2014, he smashed a 24-ball fifty after which Afghanistan won their first T20 game in WT20 history.

In the recently concluded bilateral series with Ireland, he scored a 28-ball 50 and equalled Mohammad Nabi’s record for the fastest fifty in ODIs for Afghanistan. His knock of 35 off 20 balls against England in the WT20 2016 was equally appreciated. However, Afghanistan lost the game by 15 runs. On the other hand, his brother Waheedullah Shafaq has been playing for the Under-19 teams and has represented Afghanistan in 2014 and 2016 Under 19 World Cups.
