People at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium couldn’t stop cheering for Ashish Nehra when he came to deliver the last over against New Zealand in the first T20I on November 1. We all have seen him bringing up the final over several times in the past 20 years but yesterday, it was a bit special as it was the last over of his cricketing career. The veteran Indian speedster even turned emotional before bowling the last ball and once the game ended, skipper Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan lifted him on their shoulders and took a round of the field.
Later, in the post-match presentation, Nehra revealed why he got to bowl the last over. While speaking to Sanjay Manjrekar, Nehra Ji said,
“I must be one bowler who bowled the most number of last overs for India, but it was different sort of pressure and today was much more comfortable. Virat was on my case for the last 2-3 overs and I said I will bowl the last over.”
Before ending his conversation his conversation with Manjrekar, Nehra stated that he’s always happy whether he is playing the game or retired. He said,
“I last played Test cricket when I was 24 or 25, but at the end, to have played for 18 years and to be here standing in blue clothing and to have played my final match, I could not have asked for anything more. I have no regrets. I am always happy, retired or otherwise.“
Later, skipper Virat Kohli spoke about the picture which went viral on the social media in which Ashish Nehra could be seen presenting an award to him. He said,
“That was back in 2003 after he had come back from the World Cup. I was 13 then and struggling for a place in the school team.”
